Smell Identification Test
From The SEEDS Plan:
"UPSIT (University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test): Loss of smell is an Alzheimer’s risk. This multiple choice test has no time limit and consists of 40 scratch-and-sniff strips embedded with various odors. After sniffing, the test-taker picks the one of four answer options that best describes the scent. The higher the score, the better. The test identifies Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s, and when used together with MoCA**, increases the accuracy of identifying those most likely to progress from cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease. Odor detection helps differentiate Alzheimer's from depression, because loss of smell is not associated with the latter. UPSIT is the gold standard smell test, but shorter versions are available, including the Sniffin’ Sticks twelve- or sixteen-odor identification test.
MoCA** = Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The MoCA test and instructions for administering and scoring are available online, for free, here: http://www.theseedsplan.com/resources/
